The cradle ceremony - known by many names across India's diverse communities - is one of the most meaningful of all the baby ceremonies. In North India it is called the Palna ceremony or Barsala. In South India it is the Seemantham (in Tamil families) or the Uyyala ceremony (in Telugu families). In Maharashtra it is part of the Baarsa or Naamkaran sequence. In Bengal it is the Aannaprashana-related jhoola ceremony. By whatever name, the ceremony carries the same essential meaning: the newborn baby is formally placed into the decorated cradle or swing (jhula/uyyala) for the first time by the family elders, blessing the child and marking their entry into the wider family and community.
"A Cradle ceremony is a traditional celebration in a Hindu family to welcome the newborn baby into the family. It's also said that the cradle ceremony is known for the freedom of a child from their mother - where she places her child into the cradle after the 16 days of a child's birth. It's a celebration of great joy where the parents also put a black spot near the baby's ear or forehead to ward off any evil eyes or negativity from the new born child."
The ceremony is typically performed between 11 and 40 days after birth - the specific timing varies by community and the family pandit's guidance. And because the jhula (the decorated cradle or swing) is the centrepiece of the entire ceremony, the decoration of that jhula - and of the space around it - is the most important visual element of the day. "Imagine laying your little one inside a cradle all adorned with flowers or balloons. That would be such a special and beautiful moment for parents." The photographs of the baby in the decorated jhula, surrounded by the family, are the photographs that families keep for generations.
